• G Plan — especially the Fresco and Brasilia ranges. Look for the gold or black G Plan mark, often stamped underneath drawers.
• Ercol — light elm and beech, steam-bent stick backs, the blue label under the seat.
• McIntosh of Kirkcaldy — Scottish teak, understated, usually with a small badge inside a drawer.
• Nathan — teak wall units, sideboards and drop-leaf tables; often stamped "Nathan" on the back panel.
• Meredew, Younger, Beithcraft — less famous, still solidly built, usually cheaper than the headline names.

Reproductions and modern "mid-century style" pieces are usually veneered MDF, use metric screws throughout, and have that faint chemical smell of new manufactured board. Genuine 1950s–70s pieces smell of old timber and wax.
